“During the first 1,000 days of life, a child’s brain and body are preparing to complete development,” notes Sue-Ellen Anderson-Haynes, a registered dietitian in Boston and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Therefore, it is especially important to follow your diet during this period. In addition, everything the expectant mother eats is converted into nutrients for the fetus.
Experts no longer generally recommend adding added sugar to children under 2 years of age. A team of scientists led by economist Tadeja Grakner of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles collected data from the UK Biobank on more than 60,000 participants born between October 1951 and March 1956.
It found that people who rationed sugar early in life were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure as adults than those who didn’t. The risk of developing diabetes was approximately 62% of the risk experienced by people whose sugar intake was not regulated. The probability of developing hypertension was approximately 79%.
