Windows 11 increased its market share for the sixth month in a row and reached historic usage levels in October. This growth has been accompanied by a fall in the share of computers currently running Windows 10, although the operating system remains unbeatable.
Last month Windows 11 recorded 35.55% market share overall among PCs running Microsoft software. The upward trend began in May and remained strong in the following months, allowing the current version of the OS to achieve its highest usage percentage since its launch in 2021.
It’s important to remember that Windows 11 started the year with a 27.8% share; However, it suffered a significant drop in March and April, bringing its rate to just above 26.1%. But starting in the fifth month of 2024, it put together a series of periods of growth that got it to where it is today.
The popularity of Windows 11 is undoubtedly due to the marketing of new computers (especially laptops) that come with this version, as well as updating existing hardware, since support for Windows 10 will end in less than a year. However, the latest Microsoft software there’s a long way to go before matching the numbers of its predecessor.
Since the start of the second half of 2024, it has become clear that Windows 11 has begun to close the gap with Windows 10. Meanwhile, in September, Microsoft’s latest operating system became a favorite among Steam players, confirming its growth in the field games.
Windows 11 usage reaches record levels; Windows 10 holds strong
Despite complaints against Redmond for harassment and intrusive campaigns to promote Windows 11, all indications are that the efforts are beginning to bear fruit. However, as we said earlier, the current OS is growing at a steady pace. That doesn’t mean it’s close to beating the almighty Windows 10..
Windows 10’s market share has fallen nearly 9% since May 2024, but it remains the most used version. Today it accounts for 60.97% of computers running Microsoft software. An atrocity that continues to overshadow both Windows 11 and competing platforms.
Let’s keep in mind that Windows, regardless of its version, is the most used computer operating system in the world and holds 74.41% of the market share. It is truly shocking that out of the total number of computers running Microsoft OS, more than 60% continue to use Windows 10.
Windows 11 expected to grow will remain at a good pace through 2025. Moreover, more and more computers will switch from Windows 10, which will remain without support. However, this does not necessarily mean that the latest version of the operating system may become the most used in the world next year.
Many users probably decided to stay on Win10 indefinitely, even if you no longer receive updates. You can also pay $30 per year per device to get extended updates, although for consumers this will only be offered for one year. The option will last longer for companies, educational institutions and government agencies or agencies, although it will become more expensive every year.
