Variable aperture cameras allow you to more precisely control the amount of light entering the lens. During shooting, if a higher light volume is needed for a high-quality shot, the lens shutters open wider by adopting a lower value and widening the aperture. If less light is needed, the curtains are closed.

Pictures are clearer and the Bokeh effect is adjusted. The previous flagship iPhone models, the iPhone 14 Pro, 15 Pro and 16 Pro, were equipped with a fixed aperture camera.

It is stated that there are rumors that Apple will introduce a variable aperture camera on the iPhone 17 Air. However, this model will be “weaker” and the fixed aperture camera will be “bulkier”, so it is unlikely that Apple will opt for it. This means that such a camera will appear on the iPhone 18 Pro.
