Michigan police believe the reboot issue is related to a security feature in iOS 18. When an iPhone running iOS 18 loses connection to the cellular network, this may cause a reboot, especially on devices that have been unlocked at least once. This makes it easier to access the phone using tools available to police. However, a reboot breaks this process.
The problem persists even when devices are isolated in Faraday cages that block all signals. While the exact cause is unknown, law enforcement speculates that the restart may be part of a security feature added to iOS 18.
Cryptography expert Matthew Green expressed skepticism about the theory, calling it “highly dubious” but also acknowledged the potential genius of such a feature.
