Roscosmos plans to start production of an experimental apparatus for testing the launch and landing of the future Amur-LNG reusable rocket in 2025. This stage, unofficially called “locust” or “hopper”, will be an important step towards the creation of a reusable rocket, explained Roscosmos Deputy Director of the Department of Advanced Programs Igor Pshenichnikov. According to him, the new product will serve to test basic technologies.

Pshenichnikov stated that the device will allow experiments to restart the engine in flight and test liquefied natural gas as fuel. This device will help developers and engineers learn all the necessary details and subtleties of reusable technologies, which will make the Russian space program more efficient and environmentally friendly.

In early October, Progress Rocket and Space Center General Manager Dmitry Baranov also confirmed plans to test a reusable stage using a “hopper”. He explained that this experimental prototype will simulate the first stage of Amura-LNG. Currently, sites suitable for full testing are being sought in order to test all the features of the “grasshopper” in real conditions.
