The European Commission notified Apple of a possible violation of EU “anti-geoblocking norms” in Apple Media Services: App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+ and others.
Report on the characteristic circumstances that apply after “coordinated events” conducted by the Consumer Protection Network (CPC), which take into account regulatory authorities. The Commission claims that the CPC found restrictions in Apple Media Services that it believes “unlawfully discriminate against European users based on their location.”
CPC says EU users face difficulties, limited access to Apple Media Services, different payment terms and limitations in app functionality. Among the complaints:
►Apple Media Services interface varies depending on EU/EEA country. In the application, only the interface of the country where the user account is registered is available, and it is difficult to change it.
► When making purchases in Apple Media Services, users can only use payment instruments issued in the country when registering their Apple ID.
► The App Store restricts access to the version of the store for other EU/EEA countries, preventing users from downloading applications available in other countries. When traveling temporarily or in other countries, EU/EEA users should be able to download a local app.
Apple has a month to respond to the CPC’s decisions and “make proposals to address identified instances of geo-blocking.” If the company does not eliminate violations, the European Commission will take action. [9to5]
