After activating its signal in Brazil (DF) at 5am this Wednesday (6), 5G has officially started working in Brazil. Anatel has already determined that the technology will be available in all capitals this year and will gradually reach other cities. But The new technical rules will certainly make the implementation of the protocol difficult.

One of them – the need to install ten times more antennas than the current number – will demand changes in municipal laws to create new rules for land use. Most of the current legislation dates back to the 2000s, when high-speed internet began to spread in Brazil.

Although they are more numerous, the new 5G antennas are smaller than existing equipment and are designed to occupy a variety of areas such as traffic lights, building facades and even power poles.

How are cities in São Paulo preparing for 5G?

Although the Brazilian regulator has a calendar that sets the implementation date for 5G technology based on population size, cities need to start adapting their legislation. For operators to start infrastructure work.

An example of this is the cities of São Paulo, which stand out compared to the rest of Brazil. In this context, 4% of municipalities in the state of São Paulo have already updated their lawsagainst 2% of the national average.

To this end, cities are taking actions to accelerate the arrival of 5G, supported by the support of the São Paulo State Department of Economic Development and InvestSP (Paulista Agency for the Promotion and Competitiveness) under the Conecta SP program. Early industry projections show: R$4 billion injection into the municipalities of São Paulowith the implementation of the first infrastructure of the new generation mobile internet.
