The lock screen in iOS 16 has changed a lot. Now it supports widgets and is customizable.

But we are also threatened by the appearance of advertising on this screen. According to TechCrunch, company Glance, which makes dedicated lock screen content, is already trending on some Android smartphones in the US in the next two months.

The company says its software is built into more than 400 million phones across Asia. Google is an investor.

The idea behind the change to the home screen in iOS 16 is that “a multifunctional screen lock is a way to help you use your device less.” Apple’s head of software Craig Federighi called it “the face of your smartphone” and said the likes of “Live Actions” let you get information without having to unlock your device and search through a “set of perceptual features.”

Other participants are going along the path of Glance and are going to spend their ads in iOS 16 widgets: event announcements, videos, screenshots describing events, and so on. And all because when you pick up an iPhone, the first thing you notice is your shares.

Platforms are running out, pulling more of their congestion onto lock screens, grabbing attention even before you unlock your iPhone. [The Verge]
