According to the publication, the brand could be one of the objects of a dispute with the Danish brewing company Carlsberg Group, which previously owned Baltika. In July 2023, the rights and ownership of the company in Russia were transferred to the external management of the Federal Property Management Agency and Taimuraz Bolloev became the president of the updated Baltika.
The new registration could serve both as protection against Carlsberg’s claims and as part of negotiations between the new management and the Danish company on the division of ownership, Kommersant notes. The company attempted to register the Zatecky Gus trademark in 2009, but Rospatent refused to register it, considering that the reference to the Czech trademark Žatec misled consumers. Thus, until now Baltika produced beer under license from its subsidiary.
The procedure for re-registering trademark rights could take 1.5-2 months, lawyer Sergei Zuikov told Kommersant about the news about the transfer of rights to Zatecky Gus.
Baltika owns eight factories in Russia. At the end of 2023, the beer company’s products will no longer be among the 10 most popular consumer goods among Russians, according to a NielsenIQ study from May of this year.
