Hackers resort to urgency because of the opportunity to stop serious crimes, including human trafficking and murder. On behalf of the authorities, they demand that companies disclose citizens’ data. Hackers send requests to compromised email addresses of police and other departments to obtain information.
The problem is that attackers take advantage of the fact that sending urgent messages containing confidential data does not require a court order.
“Cybercriminals are gaining access to compromised U.S. and foreign government email addresses and using them to make fraudulent emergency data access requests from U.S. companies, exposing customers’ personal information to further criminal use,” the FBI report said. The statement was included.
