High levels of inflammation seen in people in their 20s and 30s may be associated with memory and thinking problems later in life, according to a study published in July in the journal Neurology. Participants in this study who carried more inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein) had more cognitive problems in middle age.
Additionally, results of a study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry showed the following. Children with chronic inflammation have a higher risk of developing depression and psychosis in early adulthood.
The easiest way to find out if you have long-term inflammation is to have your blood tested. Most often they look at the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), ferritin and fibrinogen level. Ultrasound or other imaging methods are also used to detect inflammation.
