In a new study, a team of scientists analyzed the results of a survey of more than 1,900 American adults. In this survey, people talked about their drinking habits. Experts compared the nutritional quality of those who drank only beer (38.9%), only wine (21.8%), only spirits (18.2%), or a combination of several types of alcohol (21%). Participants’ eating habits were measured using the Healthy Eating Index.
Those who preferred beer received the lowest score with 49 points. Those who drank wine scored 55 points, while those who paired different drinks or drank only hard alcohol scored almost 53 points. Overall, no group could get close to 80 points. This score means that the person’s nutrition is normal.
Beer drinkers were generally male, young, smokers, and low-income. They also consume the most calories per day and exercise the least when adjusted for body weight.
