YouTube channel host Max Tech ran a number of different tests to see how the new M4 Max compares to the M1 Max, M2 Max and M3 Max in terms of performance. You can see the results below.
In general, the new MacBook 16″ on M4 Max won almost everywhere (except for the autonomy test). In Figma Web Design, this took just 1 minute and 6 seconds, while the model on M1 Max took 1 minute and 54 seconds. In Xcode, the new processor performed almost twice as well as the M1 Max: 84 seconds and 150 seconds respectively.

If you currently have an M1 Max or M2 Max MacBook Pro and are looking to upgrade, you’ll really notice a huge improvement in performance with the new M4 Max MBP. Almost all tests prove this. Therefore, it is definitely worth switching from M1 Max to M4 Max: the new product will be almost twice as powerful.
But if you’re already working on the M3 Max, it won’t be much worse than the new M4 Max. Except the latter edits photos 29% faster. In other tests, the MacBook Pro 16″ in the M4 Max isn’t particularly better than the same version in the M3 Max. So the best thing to do right now is to buy a discounted MacBook Pro M3 Max instead of buying a new model.
