As part of the deal, Merlin, which owns Legoland, Alton Towers and Thorpe Park, will invest more than £85 million to create two Minecraft attractions in the US and UK between 2026 and 2027. The company plans to build rollercoasters, hotel rooms, retail stores and restaurants.
In the long term, Microsoft and Merlin Entertainments could expand the partnership to other countries and territories, the partners said in a statement.
According to The Guardian, the deal with the American company could be the largest for an international theme park operator since Merlin bought four Legoland parks from Lego in 2005.
Minecraft is the best-selling video game in history, played monthly by 140 million people around the world, including regions as remote as Antarctica and even the Vatican, the newspaper notes.
