In a new study, a team of scientists found that consuming high-flavanol-containing cocoa with a fatty meal can counteract some of the effects of fatty foods and protect the vascular system from stress. The results of this study were published in the journal Food and Function.
The new study involved healthy young adults. For breakfast, they were given two croissants with 10g of salted butter, 1.5 slices of cheddar cheese and 250ml of whole milk, along with high- or low-flavanol cocoa.
Consuming fatty foods with a low-flavanol beverage during mental stress was found to worsen vascular function (by 1.29% of total body weight). This effect lasts for up to 90 minutes after the stressful event ends.
The results of the experiment also showed that a cocoa drink with a high flavanol content helped prevent deterioration of vascular function after stress and consumption of fatty foods.
You can also get flavonoids from green, black tea or fruits.
