Nike introduced the Air Max 1000 sneakers, launched in collaboration with the startup Zellerfeld, which prints shoes based on the customer’s foot. The novelty is reminiscent of the classic Air Max 1, but in a modern interpretation: with the exception of the air chamber in the sole, the sneakers are created entirely on a 3D printer.

3D printing technology allows you to alternate the density and structure of the material to print a complete shoe with a durable sole that supports the foot and a flexible upper. This makes the Air Max 1000 easy to put on and take off without the need for laces.

The presentation took place at the ComplexCon pop culture festival, where a limited edition of 1,000 pairs of sneakers could be reserved.

Nike has not said whether a larger release is planned or what the retail price will be. On Zellerfeld’s website, the 3D-printed shoes sell for prices ranging from $159 to nearly $400.

The Air Max 1000 is not the first model to use 3D printing. In 2017, Nike introduced the VaporFly Elite Flyprint, marking the first time a textile upper was printed on a sports shoe.

Other manufacturers, such as Adidas and New Balance, sell running shoes with patterned midsoles that improve cushioning when walking and running. Adidas is also experimenting with fully printed shoes and last December introduced the Climacool24 model with a mesh structure.
