In the operation performed using the da Vinci Xi robotic system, which was previously used for single lung transplantation, both lungs were replaced with four small robotic arms and a 5 cm incision. Chief surgeon and director of the lung transplant program, Dr. Stephanie Chang explained that robotic systems reduce patient pain and speed up recovery time.

Mehrkar’s health worsened after contracting COVID-19 in 2022. He now reports a 100 percent improvement in his breathing after surgery and hopes to return to an active lifestyle.
