The most important, “people’s” Apple laptop for the first time in 5 years has achieved a redesign. Unlike the obscure MacBook Pro with the new M2 processor, the world is really waiting start of sales Air.

The main question is to permanent durability. A little “slow” will it be detected with a “firmware”? After all, the novelty does not have active cooling. The M2 is already hotter than the M1, so throttling and performance drops are inevitable.

The answer to this question in four days. In the meantime, you can see how many points the new Air with M2 earned in the performance test Geekbench 5. There are already more than a dozen results.

MacBook Air test on M2 in a special load state, Geekbench 5

The best laptops with 16 GB of RAM scored 1905 single-core performance points (1919 points for MBP M2) and 8722 points for multi-core performance (against 8928 points for MBP M2). I translate into simple Russian: the new Air is objectively as productive as the Pro.

Comparison of results with MacBook Air on the M1 processor:

▪ MacBook Air M2: 1905/8722
▪ MacBook Air M1: 1754/7726

The difference between the past and new generation is 9 to 15 percent in M2 usage. The video chip is not tested in this protocol, and there the M2 can have an advantage of up to 30-40%, if you remember the consequences of running a new MacBook Pro.

But there are two “buts”. Firstly, the Geekbench 5 test is specifically designed so as not to bring the processor to “throttling”. It is measured exactly instantly, peak performance iron, not required. That is, we cannot yet judge how the laptop will behave under a long-term high load – for example, when rendering video / 3D or building a “heavy” Xcode project.

And secondly, there were other results of a similar laptop test, but already carried out noticeably after the start of “throttling”. Here it is more interesting: 1443 points for single-core performance and 6922 points for multi-core performance. This is about 25% less than normal.

Context: right now, Western bloggers are actively testing the new MacBook Air, preparing to release their reviews on July 14th. Thanks ICCD for accidentally “leaking” the removal of the embargo on reviews.

MacBook Air blog configs can be retrieved as I didn’t get the 8GB version or the maximum 24GB RAM among the results.

The Eastern country is already on the ground. Let me remind you that sales of MacBook Air with M2 will start worldwide on July 15, except for Russia. You can order a laptop in any other country by selecting the Russian keyboard as a separate one in the configurator officially on the Apple website. [Geekbench, фото © TheVerge]
