The Russian Progress cargo ship, carrying more than three tons of cargo to the ISS, faced an unexpected problem for the crew. When opening the lid, the astronauts noticed a sharp toxic odor and drops of an unknown substance. To prevent the risk of contamination spreading, the Poisk module cover was immediately closed and the Russian section of the station was isolated.
The station immediately activated air cleaning systems and increased atmospheric monitoring. According to NASA, the air on the ISS already met safety standards on Sunday. Astronaut expert Anatoly Zak confirmed that the smell was indeed toxic and the crew had to wear protective gear. NASA astronaut Don Pettit likened the smell to “spray paint” and added that the situation was under control.
The Poisk module, which was docked at the station in 2009, plays a key role in the operation of the Russian segment. It is used for docking of ships and storage of cargo. The causes of the incident are currently under investigation and the crew continues to work to eliminate the consequences and prepare to reopen the hatch.
