The burst of energy, called GLEAM-X J0704−37, comes from the outskirts of our galaxy, in the constellation Puppis, about 5,000 light-years away, where fewer stars are present, making it easier to pinpoint the source. The researchers traced the pulse to an M dwarf star in the binary system, possibly paired with a white dwarf. This discovery provides the first clear connection between long-period radio transients and such star systems.
MWA’s vast 55-petabyte data archive played a critical role in this discovery, allowing astronomers to study previously hidden cosmic events. The team’s ongoing observations aim to confirm the nature of the system and further explain these extraordinary astrophysical phenomena.
