According to VTB’s report, the number of scams involving the installation of remote access programs on smartphones via WhatsApp* is increasing in Russia. Experts explained that attackers use the SpyMax virus, which allows them to take control of the victim’s device and personal data. Victims often become those who contact scammers pretending to be employees of government agencies or commercial organizations, such as housing and communal services, clinics or payment services.
The deception plan includes an offer to switch to video calling and enable screen sharing on WhatsApp under the pretext of fixing the problem. The victim is then asked to download an app that appears to be an official service, but it is actually a virus. SpyMax locks the smartphone screen, providing access to banking data, personal accounts of government services and other confidential information. VTB experts emphasize that real technical support never asks to show the screen or install third-party programs.
Experts recommend ignoring suspicious calls and checking information directly through the official contact person of the organization. The SpyMax virus was also seen to attack Telegram users in the summer of 2024. It was distributed through a website masquerading as a Telegram portal and performed the functions of a Trojan, including data theft. The main advice is not to open links or install dubious applications to protect your data.
