“I think this is nonsense,” Kostin said, responding to a question about whether it is possible to freeze the bank deposits of the Russian population.

TASS wrote that information about blocking deposits to curb inflation appeared earlier on Telegram channels. Central Bank President Elvira Nabiullina also commented on the reports, noting their “senselessness.”

“What can I say? I can say that it’s probably hard to find more nonsense than this idea. They scare us with this, they say that banks supposedly cannot pay higher interest rates on deposits. In the professional field, these scenarios are not discussed because they do not make any sense,” Nabiullina argued.

He explained that banks guarantee high interest rates on deposits through high lending rates, which are always higher than deposit rates. In addition, even in the current conditions, companies actively apply for loans, despite the high interest rate, the head of the Central Bank added.

In mid-November, experts interviewed by RB.RU said that bank deposits in Russia could be limited in return if the official interest rate starts to fall. The founder of the TradeZone School of investment and trading school, Artem Nazarov, indicated that perhaps it is not a freeze, but an extension of the return terms, “when banks need to return the money when they begin to reduce the rate clue”.
