The NSU Innovative and Nuclear Medicine Laboratory introduces artificial intelligence methods for processing images obtained from computed tomography. The system is currently being tested in animals and is helping to develop drug candidates for the treatment of cancer using neutron capture therapy.
The head of the laboratory, Vladimir Kanygin, explained that the artificial intelligence is trained to perform routine tasks such as analyzing and identifying images. This will reduce the influence of human factors such as fatigue and distraction and increase diagnostic accuracy. Thanks to the joint efforts of physicists and doctors, a tomographic atlas is being created showing the normal and pathological states of animals, which will help the system to recognize changes more effectively.
Among the first results achieved by scientists is the development of algorithms for segmenting organs in images. Team member Ulyana Krechetova said the next stage is to create models to classify tumors and identify pathologies.
The project is also conducting experiments on the use of artificial intelligence for drug selection in neutron capture therapy. Compounds containing boron and silicon oxide nanoparticles are already being investigated, and artificial intelligence is analyzing the results in photographs of laboratory animals.
