Roskomnadzor said it is considering limiting work in Russia to eight foreign suppliers who do not meet the agency’s data protection requirements. Since the RKN cannot be sure of the security of its work and companies continue to provide hosting services in the country, the agency intends to suspend its activities in the Russian Federation to avoid risks.

The department’s message, cited by RIA Novosti and Interfax, includes Amazon Web Services In., GoDaddy.com LLC; DigitalOcean LLC, Hetzner Online GmbH, HostGator.com LLC, Kamatera Inc., Ionos Inc. and Network Solutions LLC.
Speaking of risks, RKN means the vulnerability of foreign sites to DDoS attacks, which means the loss of sensitive user data, and if the consumer is a business organization, financial losses and reputational risks.
“Roskomnadzor cannot protect sites hosted on sites of foreign providers from DDoS attacks and other threats,” RIA Novosti quotes RKN.
“Organizations that place their resources on the premises of foreign hosting providers may face a number of serious threats,” the department believes and advises website owners to switch to sites of providers that “conscientiously comply with Russian laws and are included in the registry of hosting providers.”
By law, hosting providers must ensure information security by actively interacting with the Communications Public Network Monitoring and Management Center (CMU SSOP) to counter DDoS attacks, and must also be included in the registry of Roskomnadzor hosting providers. Currently there are 474 organizations in it.
