The Russian Federal Agency for Medicine and Biology has patented a new breath analysis device called “electronic nose”. This device has the capacity to detect diseases such as COVID-19, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases transmitted through airborne droplets within a few minutes. According to the ministry’s press service, the device analyzes volatile organic compounds in exhaled air, which makes it possible to accurately diagnose the disease.

As FMBA president Veronika Skvortsova explains, the device works using gas sensors that react to exhaled air and then mathematically analyze the resulting data. An important feature of the “electronic nose” is its improved design, which takes into account the influence of the external atmosphere on the result. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence methods, the device can quickly analyze data and make a diagnosis.

According to Skvortsova, the entire scanning process takes one and a half to five minutes, making the device suitable for mass use. This discovery could significantly improve disease diagnosis by speeding up the detection process and increasing the accuracy of results.
