“We have been fighting for years to compete on equal terms with Apple, and it seems almost surreal that we have finally been able to launch our solution. This will be an exciting battle between the world’s biggest brand and Vipps,” said Vipps CEO Rune Garborg.

Customers of SpareBank 1, DNB and more than 40 other Norwegian banks will be able to use the Vipps MobilePay service. In the future, it is planned to expand their number. In the first stage, the payment service will work with terminals that accept cards from the local BankAxept payment system. Support for Visa and Mastercard is expected in the coming months, Vipps says.

In July, Apple and the EU reached a deal under which the company must give third-party app developers access to NFC technology for contactless payments on iPhones. According to regulators, this should promote competition.

Apple Pay has not worked in Russia since 2022. In mid-November, Izvestia wrote that Sberbank plans to launch an analogue of Apple Pay, which will work via Bluetooth, and banks Novikom and Zenit are ready to join the tests.
