The most popular world event, according to the search engine, was the Copa América. In 2024, the competition was held in the United States and the Argentine team took first place for the 16th time. The second place in terms of number of applications was occupied by the European Football Championship.
In the “People” category, first place went to Trump, who won the United States presidential election. And the query “Elections in the United States” became the most popular in the “News” category. The attacks on Trump’s life at a rally in Pennsylvania and near a golf club in West Palm Beach became the eighth most searched topic among Google users around the world.
In addition to the president-elect of the United States, people were interested in the life of Kate Middleton (Princess Catherine of Wales), who spoke about her battle with cancer, and in the fate of the Algerian Olympic boxing champion, Iman Khelif , who was supposedly found to have male biological characteristics.
The most popular athlete, besides Khelif, was 58-year-old boxer Mike Tyson, who lost the fight to 27-year-old blogger Jake Paul. Netflix, which produced the fight, said it was the most streamed sporting event in history.
The global failure of the Crowdstrike cloud antivirus in July 2024, which caused problems in the operation of Windows around the world, also affected Google trends. The outage affected 8.5 million devices, including advertising panels in airports and television screens in government and commercial institutions.
The number of requests related to cryptocurrencies, in particular, including the popular altcoins XRP, Dogecoin and Iota, has also reached a record level. During Bitcoin’s meteoric rise in November 2024, searches for “bitcoin” and “altcoins” surged to January 2021 peaks.
