A version of the Airbus A321XLR model is equipped with LEAP 1-A engines manufactured by the French CFM International. Another version powered by engines from American aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney is still awaiting FAA approval.
As noted by aviation industry source The Air Current, the abbreviation XLR in the aircraft’s name stands for “ultra-long range.” The upcoming jetliner can fly up to 4,700 nautical miles, or about 5,400 statute miles, rather than the 4,000 nautical miles for which the A321LR (“long range”) is designed. The plane can do this because it has fuel tanks all over its body that allow it to take in more fuel.
