The study confirmed the presence of known viruses, including HIV and herpes, in semen after chronic infections. However, new ones were also discovered: Ebola, Zika and monkeypox viruses were discovered after acute diseases. Scientists analyzed 373 studies and found that 98 reported cases of acute infection with virus in semen.
Viruses identified include adenovirus, hepatitis E, and Zika, which multiply in semen. In particular, there is evidence that these viruses, along with other viruses such as Ebola, Marburg, and West Nile, can be transmitted through sexual contact. The study highlights the possibility of sexual transmission of viruses, which has not previously been considered in this context.
The time it took to detect viruses in semen varied: Zika and Ebola persisted for more than two years, while other viruses, such as dengue, were detected for only a few weeks.
