When a bird flies, it carries air under its wings. This air then rises up over the tips of the wings, creating a flow on both sides. Thanks to the devices attached to the ibises, experts learned that the birds actually calculate the force of their wings to catch the air flow coming from the bird flying in front.
This technique is also called “pulling”. Used by geese and pelicans. Smaller birds create more complex aerial movements.
