Intermittent fasting really helps you lose weight. But it can also slow down the growth of hair on the scalp. This was discovered in an experiment on mice by scientists from Westlake University in Zhejiang, China.
Mice following intermittent fasting showed improved metabolic health. But experts have found a link between dietary restrictions and slowing down hair regeneration.
A similar process may occur in humans. True, as scientists point out, it’s unlikely to be that serious because we have a much slower metabolism and a different hair growth pattern. It is important to know that intermittent fasting can have similar effects.
During the experiment, it was discovered that fur completely regrew within 30 days in normally fed mice. However, in those who ate for 8 hours and fasted for 16 hours every day, only partial hair grew after 96 days.
The team found that this slowdown in hair growth was related to the stress experienced by the stem cells in the hair follicles. These cells cannot cope with this.
A small clinical study was also conducted in humans. 49 healthy young people participated. It turns out that a time-restricted diet (fasting for 18 hours a day) reduces hair growth by an average of 18%. However, the sample was small and the observation period was short. According to scientists, a larger sample may yield different results.
