“Apple’s challenge is to avoid the flexibility that current products experience when they are open. And the company has made progress in this sense: the prototypes of the new device created by the industrial design group have an almost imperceptible curvature,” said Gurman.
The largest iPad currently has a diagonal of 12.9 inches. According to the journalist, Apple knows that gamers, software developers and other users want the largest possible screen, and the only way to launch a mobile device with that screen is to make it foldable, otherwise it will be difficult to place the device in a bag or backpack.
Additionally, Apple is exploring the possibility of developing a foldable iPhone, Gurman writes. He noted that Apple remains alone among major smartphone makers in not having foldable devices. Samsung, Google and Huawei have their own versions.
Sources told The Wall Street Journal that the foldable iPhone could go on sale in 2026, but the date could be delayed to resolve technical issues. Apple declined to comment to the WSJ. The Information wrote that the American company was already thinking about creating foldable smartphones in 2018.
