“We managed to agree with the Americans that sanctions against Gazprombank would be suspended for three months, to avoid danger, and we also agreed with the Russians on an alternative way to pay for gas supplies,” Orban said (cited by TASS).
According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, he will now be “in a relatively safe position for several months.” The Chief of Staff also noted that there should be no problems with the transit of Russian gas to Budapest through Sofia.
Previously, on December 20, the head of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of this country, Alparslan Bayraktar, announced the receipt of similar relief for Türkiye. He clarified that Ankara was able to achieve exceptions to the sanctions after a series of negotiations with US officials.
In mid-November, Gazprombank was sanctioned by the US Treasury, along with the state corporation Dom.RF, BKS bank and other companies. In total, about 100 Russian individuals and legal entities were on the US department’s SDN list.
