Reports of unidentified drones started coming in November and were seen every day except Thanksgiving. Panic grows even though most of the “video evidence” turns out to be aircraft footage. Lawmakers including Sen. Chuck Schumer called for a “federal response.” Others, like Jeff Van Drew, fueled conspiracy theories by claiming the drones were linked to Iran.

The media writes that hysteria leads to “dangerous behavior.” So people started shining lasers at regular commercial airplanes, which is a federal crime and could harm pilots.

Authorities say there is no threat to public safety, but they have not been able to identify the source of the drones.
