A record number of lung transplants were performed in Russia this year – 32 transplants were performed, making it a historical maximum for the country. Shumakov National Medical Center for Transplantology reports that such an operation is performed in cases where other methods of treatment no longer work and the patient’s life is at risk. Diseases requiring transplantation include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and cystic fibrosis.
Most of the operations were performed at the Shumakov Center, as well as the Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine and the Krasnodar Regional Clinical Hospital, including a cardiopulmonary complex transplant. Sergei Gauthier, head of the center, noted that the difficulties in this field arise from the serious condition of the patients and limited donor resources, but experts continue to find solutions. According to him, lung transplantation requires doctors to be highly trained and overcome many challenges.
Particular emphasis is placed on the innovative ex vivo perfusion technique, which makes it possible to “treat” donor organs before transplantation and improve their condition. Russian doctors also successfully operate on patients with cystic fibrosis, which is often rejected in other countries. Experts try to help everyone, even in the most difficult situations, giving them a chance at a full life.
