According to the publication, the leak affected a special application used by drivers of Volkswagen electric vehicles. In total, several terabytes of contact information of car owners, as well as information on the movement of vehicles in several countries, including Germany, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom, were leaked to the network.
Der Spiegel noted that information on electric vehicle drivers, including German politicians, businessmen, police and intelligence agents, had been stored in Amazon’s cloud without proper protection for several months.
The leak occurred because Cariad, a Volkswagen subsidiary created to develop a platform for all of the automaker’s electric vehicles, made a mistake, the magazine writes. After the German hacking community Chaos Computer Club contacted Cariad, access to the data was closed.
Cariad Der Spiegel said customers “do not need to take any action” as the breach did not affect sensitive data such as passwords or payment details. The company added that the information collected was used to improve the performance of batteries and related software.
