According to Yonhap, there were a total of 181 people on board, including six crew members. Most of the passengers are South Korean citizens, except for two Thai citizens.
According to authorities, only two women managed to survive the disaster;
The preliminary cause of the incident was a malfunction of the landing gear: the plane landed on the fuselage, and not on the landing gear, skidded along the runway, after which it crashed into a concrete barrier, exploded and caught fire.
The malfunction could be due to a collision between the plane and the birds. At the same time, Yonhap writes that witnesses to the plane crash saw flames in the plane’s engine and heard several explosions before the incident.
South Korea’s news agency later reported that rescuers had recovered the bodies of all 179 people who died in the plane crash. This is the deadliest plane crash in South Korea.
This week, a Kazakhstani Airlines plane crashed in Kazakhstan, near the city of Aktau, while flying from Baku to Grozny. According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, 27 passengers out of 67 people on board survived.
