The study highlights how chatbots and other anthropomorphic AI agents have become important tools for manipulating human preferences. By analyzing users’ online behavior, preferences, habits, and even emotional states, these technologies can predict their desires and create “new levels of trust.”
Scientists warn that this could lead to major social manipulations in the future. AI will use models that collect and analyze data about the user, from their political views to their communication style, age, and communication preferences. Based on this information, artificial intelligence will be able to guide user actions, for example, choosing certain goods, services or political positions.
Experts emphasize that the “intention economy” will treat people’s motivation as a new commodity and turn it into a manipulable “currency”. Johnny Pen, one of the authors of the study, warns that if appropriate regulation is not made, the practice can have serious consequences in areas such as elections, freedom of the press and fair market competition.
