The Exos M drive is available in two versions: 30TB, which uses traditional Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) technology, and 32TB, which uses the more controversial Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology. The latter increases capacity by stacking data on top of each other but raises reliability concerns. This is also used in a Western Digital drive of the same capacity.
The new drive is built on Mozaic 3+, which enables Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology and 3TB storage density per platter. Despite concerns about HAMR’s reliability, Seagate says these issues have been resolved. The company claims that the average time between failures of its drives is 2.5 million hours, making it durable and reliable.
The drive supports SATA III interface and data transfer rates up to 6 Gbps. Seagate says the new model is more energy efficient than previous models, reducing operating costs and helping the company meet its sustainability goals. The new product also uses more recycled materials than the company’s previous drives.
