An important role in the disease is played by the death of retinal ganglion cells that transmit visual signals to the brain. Scientists in China are focused on creating drugs that can protect these cells and repair visual pathways. They used artificial intelligence (AI) to look for molecules that inhibit necroptosis, one of the cell death mechanisms involved in retinal damage.

The study revealed the promising compound HG9−91−01. This compound has been shown in experiments to effectively prevent retinal cell death caused by damage that mimics glaucoma.

Artificial intelligence played an important role in the development. Using algorithms, the interactions of the molecules with the RIPK3 protein responsible for necroptosis were analyzed. Scientists used molecular modelling, cell culture tests and animal experiments. HG9−91−01 not only proved effective in protecting cells, but also performed well in safety tests.
