“The transition of all Russian universities to an updated higher education system is planned from September 1, 2026,” the ministry’s press service informed RIA.
At the same time, students enrolled in current educational programs will be able to complete their studies in accordance with the previous educational system.
The State Duma supported the decision to abandon the Bologna international higher education system. The Speaker of the House of Parliament said that “this is the right step to improve the quality of education” and promised the support of the Ministry of Education and Science.
According to the proposal of the Ministry of Education and Science, the new higher education system will not have bachelor’s or master’s degrees. Instead, training will be divided into basic higher education, specialized higher education and postgraduate education.
The basic level will last five to six years, the specialized level one to three years. As Minister of Education and Science Valery Falkov stated in a report to the State Duma in May 2024, the duration of training in some specialties, such as engineers, teachers and doctors, will be longer.
