Modern trends towards increasing speed and volume of information transmitted on fiber optic communication lines (FOCL) have led to the need to use technologies for spatial and frequency multiplexing of channels. Spatial channel multiplexing technology involves the use of a special optical fiber with several cores. This technology has been discussed in detail above.

In addition to increasing the speed and flow of information transmitted to FOCL, its security is an important advantage. Today, guaranteed protection of transmitted data against the threat of hacking by a quantum computer can be provided through the use of quantum key distribution (KKD) technology. It is known that the implementation of QKD technology requires two communication channels: one open and one quantum, so spatial channel multiplexing technology will reduce the cost and simplify the organization of quantum communication systems, including construction. of quantum networks. Therefore, the NIO “Quantum Center” MTUCI, together with scientists from the Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who were directly involved in the development of technology for the manufacture of multicore fibers for domestic industry, began a cycle of research on the features of the use of domestic multicore fibers in the implementation of multichannel quantum communication systems.

For the first time, MTUCI employees simultaneously implemented multiple quantum communication channels over a multicore fiber manufactured by GPI RAS specialists. In particular, the work of the MTUCI-MISiS quantum network was carried out through one channel, and within the MTUCI Quantum Center, two more pairs of quantum communication units were connected through the same multicore fiber segment.

“Multicore fiber optic technology can be used to significantly increase the capacity of QKD systems, either by allowing parallel transmission of independent keys between different end users using the same transmission medium (relevant in access networks), or by transmitting a single key across all fiber cores between two end users (a desirable feature in backbone networks),” explained Yuri Mironov, Dean of the Faculty of Network and Communication Systems, MTUCI.

The unused channels of the multicore fiber were used to introduce external laser radiation in order to investigate its effect on the characteristics of quantum communication. The experiments of the employees of MTUCI and GPI RAS showed the possibility of stable simultaneous operation of three quantum communication channels, which confirms the high prospects for the joint use of quantum key distribution and spatial channel multiplexing technologies.

“With the use of new fibers, record data transfer speeds have been achieved, in the order of several petabits per second. In addition, because the spatial sealing technology enables the number of optical fiber cables to be reduced, it is promising for saving cable laying space in access networks, simplifying the structure of information transmission paths, and reducing the number of cables in data storage and processing centers,” said Olga Egorova, GPI RAS specialist.
