According to court documents, the Tula Central District Court decided to block the website of Chinese online clothing retailer Shein in Russia due to a violation of the law on LGBT* propaganda. The lawsuit was filed by the local department of Rospotrebnadzor. The publication “Vestk” (recognized as a foreign agent in Russia) drew attention to this.

During Internet monitoring, Rospotrebnadzor discovered several bracelets “containing LGBT* paraphernalia” on the market’s website. Department officials have ensured that Russians, including minors, can place orders on the website.

According to the court, the information contained on the site may have a “negative impact on the moral, spiritual, mental and physical development and health of citizens of the Russian Federation.” The court decided to block the entire site and not only limit access to certain product categories.

Shein is one of the largest Chinese online stores that sells clothing, accessories and home items. The company was founded in 2008 and in 2023 its net profit exceeded $2 billion.

Due to the cessation of Visa and Mastercard payment systems in Russia, Shein stopped directly serving Russian customers. However, several intermediary services offered services for the purchase and delivery of market products.

Despite the court decision, Shein has not yet been included in Roskomnadzor’s register of prohibited resources.
