Impressions of the series The Boys and its third season.

Today, various superhero projects on big and small screens are a dime a dozen. Although they differ in details, they are otherwise very similar to each other. But among all this variety, there are some that stand out. Today we will talk about one of these, namely the Boys. About a week ago, the last episode of the third season aired. And I would like to talk about this series in general and the third season in particular.

about the plot

The plot of the series shows us a world in which, as in many other universes familiar to us, there are superheroes. However, in this world, they are not at all what they seem. They are moral monsters that kill hundreds, if not thousands. They are obsessed with themselves and their own popularity, instead of saving the world. And they are managed by the Voight mega-corporation, which creates movies, various shows and a bunch of various merchandise on the theme of these heroes.

On the contrary, they are ordinary people who have suffered from the actions of these heroes. They all lost someone or something and came together in an attempt to stop this outrage and open the eyes of the world to the true essence of this corporation and its wards. They just call themselves The Boys. They may not have superpowers, but there is a very big and interesting life experience that helps them get information, come up with various ways to fight and all that.

Third season

The story of the third season begins a year after the end of the second. Hughie works at the office to counter the Supers (people with super powers). He constantly passes information to Butcher (The Butcher) and the others, and they catch the Supers and deliver them to the clutches of the law. However, something goes wrong and Huey learns the true identity of the head of this office. She is a super herself and it was she who trashed the congress at the end of the second season. After that, they decide to go back to the old way of fighting, not just handing the Supers over to the authorities, but destroying them like before.

Meanwhile, Homelander (Patriot/Stronghold) is trapped. He is heavily controlled from all sides. Both Voight’s top and others who have dirt on him. And the power in all seven is transferred to Starlight (Asterisk). Of all this, Homelander is even more crazy and the actor demonstrates it perfectly. The situation is also aggravated by the fact that he cannot find his son, who is being hidden from him.

Queen Maeve, in order to help the boys fight Homelander, brings them an experimental serum that grants superpowers for 24 hours. In the end, Butcher and the others, in search of weapons against their main enemy, go on the trail of Soldier, Homelander’s predecessor, whom everyone believes dead for almost 40 years.

The main feature of the series.

The main reason for the audience’s love for this project was its craziness and garbage. Correct hit. This program has it all and is not at all shy. From foul language and sexual acts, to actual dismemberment. Anything can happen here at any time. And those things, despite their rigidity, perfectly entertain. Thus, the creators deconstruct the usual image of superheroes for us, playing in contrast to Marvel and DC. It is fresh and original. And for this at least, Amazon and Eric Kripke are to be commended. They, at least, were not afraid to create such a project. But is everything okay?

main problems

After looking around, I did some thinking and noticed several major shortcomings. First, the third season largely copies the second. See for yourself. A superhero from the past that everyone thinks is a legend? Check! Drain this superhero and portray him as a villain in the public eye? Check! The influence of Homelander’s son in the plot and the final fight? Check! Of course, many details and things are different, but still. Although this is not the worst.

Second, the third season hardly advances the plot on a global level. We both started in one place and ended in almost the same place. Also, it greatly pushes back the achievements of the second season, because again we get the same introduction as at the beginning. The boys again prove unnecessary to anyone and again take on the Supers alone. Although this is actually a good thing.

Third, some characters openly merged. If in the case of the second season and Stormfront (Storm) everything was built logically, went through the story arc and, in the end, lost, then with the Soldier everything is much more stupid. He literally went back to where he came from. Let the creators say that he will return, but that throwback of the character within the season seems stupid. But mostly I feel sorry for Black Noir. In the original comics, this is an extremely important character. He plays an important role in the plot. Here, we really didn’t know anything about him throughout the entire series, and he just dies suddenly. And we as viewers just don’t care about him, because he hardly ever revealed himself at all.

don’t look up

I also noticed that, in many ways, the third season (especially its finale) is very similar to the recent Netflix hit called Don’t Look Up. Here, albeit indirectly, it shows society’s reaction to the discord of the Superheros. If the first two seasons tried in some way to give realism in this regard (although they did not always succeed), in the third season everything becomes a little more fun.

People begin to divide into groups, each representing their idol. Someone for Maeve, someone for Starlight, someone for Homelander. The climax of all this comes at the end, when Homelander kills a disgruntled fan in front of millions. He does it subconsciously and when he realizes what he has done, he freaks out. However, society suddenly positively evaluates such an action, which pleases him madly.

Can we call it a project roll-up? Probably not. Guys have always been somewhat hyperbolic, and now they’re not shy about it. What satire, when everything is taken to the point of absurdity, perhaps even on the face of this universe. And I even wonder how he will overcome this situation next season.

Actors and characters

But what is worth praising the project are the actors and the characters. Karl Urban has long been one of my favorite actors. And here he is one of those who throw this series, forcing you to close your eyes to the shortcomings. The Butcher image has only five points.

The second to carry the project on his shoulders is, of course, Homelander. And I hate this character. But I don’t hate him at all because he’s a bad character at all. I hate him because he is a great character. Anthony Starr perfectly conveys the inferiority of this “superhero”. A facial expression is worth something.

My third favorite character is Frenchie. In a certain sense, a broken character who had a very difficult and ugly past, but who knew how to change and find his new family in front of the Boys and Kimiko. In the third season, she spent a lot of time on it, even if her story deviates a bit from both the Boys and the entire plot of the season as a whole. And if her French accent also comes through in the voice acting, it’s usually beautiful. Kimiko this season, by the way, is very cute. Even in violent scenes.

Huey and Starlight (especially Starlight), on the other hand, seemed like pretty boring characters to me. They are too standard for a project of this type. And if the first two seasons did not really distinguish them, in the third, against the background of an increased level of garbage, this becomes more and more noticeable. On the other hand, they can be considered a kind of island of fitness in a vast sea of madness. MM can also be dragged here, but to a lesser extent.

Maeve is also a very interesting character. Since the first season, she goes through a very difficult path. This path is generally similar to Starlight’s path, but Maeve herself is more realistic. She has a lot of experience and is nowhere near as idealistic as Starlight. And the ending that her character got this season is probably the best ending for her. About the same, suddenly, can be said about the Express (the one that killed Huey’s girlfriend at the beginning of the series). Here he is really having a strong development.

conclusion

Overall, I can’t call the third season of The Boys unequivocally good or bad. When you see it, you don’t really think about it. Even then, when you begin to think about what you saw, questions begin to arise. This season can even be called Santa Barbara, with Soldier, Homelander, and Ryan, if you know what I mean. It does not deepen, but expands this universe in its own way. Let the general plot already stalled, but some characters still get their development. I am more than sure that many viewers will enjoy the third season of The Boys. And if you like this project, then even more. I just pointed out some shortcomings and changes, nothing more.
