Researchers from the University of California examined heart images of 3,635 people living near major airports in the UK and compared those living in noisy areas with those living in quieter areas. They found that the heart muscles of people exposed to high noise levels were stiffer and thicker.
This effect was most pronounced for those exposed to noise at night, which may be associated with sleep disturbance. The study also found that heart abnormalities caused by airplane noise can quadruple the risk of heart problems. Factors such as high blood pressure and obesity played an important role in this.
