In early 2023, an anonymous hacker gained access to an internal OpenAI forum and stole information about the development of new technologies. Which ones exactly, is not specified.

The hacker was unable to access ChatGPT code and personal data of employees and clients.

OpenAI executives disclosed that employees and boards were hacked in April 2023. But the breach was not publicly resolved because confidential information was not disclosed.

In addition, OpenAI concluded that the hacker had no ties to foreign countries, so the FBI was not notified of the hack either.

Some OpenAI employees were concerned about the company’s security. OpenAI’s technical manager, Leopold Aschenbrenner, sent a government memo alleging that the company was not doing enough to prevent its secrets from being compromised by the Chinese government and other foreign adversaries.

Aschenbrenner was fired this spring for uncovering another leak. He believes his dismissal was politically motivated. [The New York Times]
