RedNote works on a similar principle to TikTok: users scroll through a stream of short videos customized to their interests. Although the app’s interface is primarily in Chinese, TikTok has already released tutorials on how to change the language to English. This helped draw attention to the new product. Moreover, RedNote is actively publishing videos welcoming so-called “TikTok refugees.”
Although RedNote is a new name for many users, the app has been used in China for over a decade. It is believed to compete with ByteDance’s Douyin and e-commerce giant Alibaba, which has an audience of around 300 million.
RedNote isn’t the only one benefiting from TikTok’s potential ban. Other apps have also begun to gain popularity, such as Lemon8 by ByteDance and Flip by US company Humans, Inc. Combining social features and online shopping, Flip ranked #4 in the App Store.
Another alternative, ReelShort, tries to attract the attention of users by offering short video clips with mini-movie-like plots. Although this format is different from the usual TikTok, ReelShort currently ranks 7th in the App Store and 2nd in Google Play.
