The new so-called “AI Growth Zones” will provide better access to electricity and simplified approval procedures for building data centers, officials said. The first such site will be located in Culham, where the UK Atomic Energy Agency is headquartered.
An energy council will be formed to include public and private sector representatives to implement the project. It will examine the possibility of powering data centers with energy from small modular reactors using nuclear fission technology. The reason for this decision is that modern artificial intelligence systems require large energy costs and the increasing interest in technology pushes countries to search for new energy sources.
The government’s plan also includes expanding supercomputer projects and attracting technical talent to the country.
