The expert and his team were able to reprogram the ACE3 controller into the USB-C port using custom cables, reverse engineering, RF channel analysis, and electromagnetic interference.
ACE3’s integration with the iPhone’s internal systems means that hacking it could compromise the device’s operating system. However, when Roth reported the issue to Apple, the company said it did not consider its proposed hacking method to be a threat due to the high complexity of the attack.
Security expert Mike Grover, creator of the O.MG Cable USB hacking tool, told Forbes that Roth’s hacking method poses a risk to the iPhone, but said he is confident Apple will “eventually introduce hardware changes.” .
Roth himself, in conversation with the publication, pointed out that Android phone users should not worry about the security of their USB-C ports, since the problem only affects Apple device drivers.
