The project is based on using DNA of extinct species found in permafrost. Genetic material from mammoths is being integrated into cells of Asian elephants to create a hybrid organism. The initiative emphasizes that its goals are not only scientific breakthroughs, but also the restoration of ecosystems, conservation of biodiversity and helping other species.

Despite its goals, the project raises skepticism among scientists. Paleontologist Karl Flessa believes that the new creature is unlikely to be a full-fledged mammoth and doubts the advisability of returning it to its changed habitat. However, Colossal Biosciences says the rescued animals will be kept under strict surveillance in biocontainment areas.
